Rated: The world's top five safest cars

The Volkswagen Golf has been rated the safest car by Europe’s independent crash test body.

The Volkswagen Golf has come out on top in a list of the five safest cars of 2009, released by European independent crash test body, Euro NCAP.

The multi award-winning hatchback - and Drive's 2009 Car of the Year - finished ahead of two hybrid cars, the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius.

The ranking system takes into account a range of different safety parameters gathered from a number of different crash tests, including side-, front- and rear-impact, as well as a test that simulates a car slamming sideways into a pole.

Cars are rated for adult occupant protection, child occupant protection, pedestrian protection and active safety technology such as stability control, which can prevent a car from skidding out of control.

The surprise packet of the results was the Hyundai i20 small car (on sale in a few months), which ranked 4th ahead of a trio of cars tied for fifth; the Toyota Avensis sedan (not sold in Australia), the Volvo XC60 and the Opel/Vauxhall Astra, which was dropped from Holden's local line-up in favour of the Korean-sourced Cruze last year.

The Golf was ranked number one for adult protection with 97 per cent, while the Avensis topped the child protection rating and the Insight offered the best protection for pedestrians.

But Euro NCAP didn't just hand out bouquets. It lists the Suzuki Alto and the Toyota Urban Cruiser (not sold here) as the worst performers for 2009, with three-star ratings. The local version of the Alto scored four stars from the Australasian chapter of NCAP.

Euro NCAP crash-tested 33 different models last year, usually conducting four crash tests on each vehicle.

The organisation has raised the bar for its top five-star rating in 2010, increasing the minimum scores for each rating category.

1k deposit taken for my GTI

Funny story...

I had a very full sunday as I had arranged for ppl to view my car at 11am, 1130 and 12pm. So after showing the 1st guy the car and taking him for a spin, the guy said "I will call you" just at that moment...both the 1130 and 12 guys arrived..

So I had 3 sets of ppl going over my car....can see the 11am guy get all jumpy and see his brain cogs turning....from the corner of my eye..saw him walk away and think to himself...while i layan the new guys...just as im about to take the new guys for a spin....he walks back, "bro, dun need to let the others test...heres the deposit" :)

So car is Booked...deposit Rm1k taken. Thanks for viewing guys, the GTI lasted 4 days after posting on Mudah.com and VGCM forum. I had to take leave after posting the ad as there were too many ppl calling to view the car, on average i showed 3-4 ppl a day, and most stated they would start looking for loan this coming monday

VW actually having 3 models with waiting list. For those of you who havnt booked yet, the NKOTB VW dealer is giving rm5k "discount" on the GTI, might not last long, as all the other dealers are complaining about it, as the coporate guideline from VWGM is no discount.

Just got back from a testing out a customers Toureg, cos he fitted a reverse camera to his 723....he got it new for RM245k, yes its a 5 year old car...but 245k for a toureg is amazing value for money

Why is MITI involved in Car pricing?

I heard on the grapevine that VW actually submitted RM228k as the selling price for the Scirocco, and MITI rejected the price, after various appeals etc, MITI approved the price of 243k

My question is.....why the hell is MITI involved? how can they not approve a lower selling price that the manufacturer themselves submitted?

I have always found the pricing of the scirocco strange, now i know why....cos if VW had gotten thier target price at 228k, it would sell like hot cakes, now at 243k...its actually more expensive then the much higher spec Passat CC

1st shipment of RCD510 arrived

I must say im impressed with the condition of the units, all have screen protectors on, Valid VW codes, and are scratch free. Im very pleased.

However, Im afraid all have been booked. So any new request will have to wait for the next shipment. I have a feeling Demand > Supply when CNY rolls along

Why so expensive?

This is a rant post :)

I was looking around to try and retrofit bluetooth to my VW HU as well as the MK6 style rear camera to my mk5....and you know how much the kits costs? 2.2k for bluetooth, 3k for the reverse camera...NOT including shipping...whalau eh....3k...i can hire a cameramen and chuck him in my boot

there goes my plans of getting bluetooth and a cool reverse camera....good also, can continue to save for my Roc R
